Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program that provides
students with reading practice. This program allows teachers to
help students individually with skill building while allowing
students to check out books that interest them. The AR program
allows students to read at their own ability level, which in
turn helps to build their reading skills.
Each student is tested
to find out their reading level, and then they start checking
out books on their level. After they read a book, they take a
short quiz on a computer. The tests are multiple choice
featuring 5, 10, or 20 questions. The computer tells how many
questions he/she has answered correctly and shows the correct
answers for the questions that have been missed.
Reading points
are awarded based on the book’s point value and the number of
correct answer. In one week 4th and 5th grade have to read three books and
they test on them weekly. Students in 3rd and 2nd
grade have to read two books and test on them weekly. The 1st
graders have to read one book and test on them weekly also. The books are
color coded by level. For every book the students read they will get points.
They use the points to buy prizes. |
