State
Mandated Testing
The Student
Assessment Division of the Texas Education Agency manages and
oversees the development, administration, scoring, and analysis of
the statewide assessment program. The statewide assessment program
currently includes the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS),
the State-Developed Alternative Assessment (SDAA), and the Reading
Proficiency Tests in English (RPTE).
The TAKS measures
the statewide curriculum in a number of curriculum areas and at
several grade levels including high school exit exams required for
graduation. The RPTE tests are designed to measure annual growth in
the English reading proficiency of second language learners and the
comprehensive assessment of limited English proficient (LEP)
students. The SDAA assesses special education students in Grades 3-8
who are receiving instruction in the Texas Essential Knowledge and
Skills (TEKS) but for whom TAKS is an inappropriate measure of their
academic progress. For more information on the state testing program
